Is your internet connection unusually sluggish? If so, you may want to check its speed so you can make the relevant changes to your settings or maybe you are simply curious how fast it really is

Whatever your reason for checking, we have the perfect tool for a quick broadband speed test.

We can

  • measure your current internet speed to the server closest to you (we have almost 5000 servers worldwide).
  • test your download speed (the speed with which you receive data from the internet),
  • Test your upload speed (the speed at which you upload data to the internet),
  • Test your connection (max number of connections per minute)
  • Test your ping (response time between your computer and the internet).

All tests are performed within your browser over HTTP (TCP) and require no further software. It’s as easy as that!

What is Broadband

Broadband, in essence, is a measure of how many ‘bits’ per second your network can transmit, process and receive.

Ie: it’s a measure of how fast your internet is.

Have you heard of ‘bandwidth’? This is a measure of how fast data is transmitted from one point to another within a network. The higher the number, the faster your internet.

However, we don’t use ‘bits’ to measure how fast broadband is, (they’re much too small), we use ‘Kilobits’, ‘Megabits’ and ‘Gigabits’; or ‘KB’, ‘MB’ and ‘GB’.

Listed below is how many Bits are in each of these common units of measurement used in Broadband speed testing:

  • 1 Kbps = 1,000 bits per second
  • 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second
  • 1 Gbps = 1,000,000,000 bits per second

How Are Broadband Speeds Measured?

Broadband speeds are measured in ‘megabits per second’-Mb Mbits p/s or Mbps.

Bits are tiny units of data and a megabit is one million of them.

The higher the number of Mbps (megabits per second) you have, the faster your online activity should be. It should mean faster download speeds, webpages loading faster, streaming of music or videos begins without a hitch and video calls or online games should display smoothly.
